Tartu lies 180 km south-east of Tallinn. It was the cradle of the 19th century nationalist movement of Estonia and it is the site of the oldest university in the North of Europe. Tarty is considered by many to be the capital of Estonian culture. It is a vigorous university town with a rich cultural heritage. Historically Tartu was a member of Hanseatic League and a crossroad of trading routes from the Baltic Sea ports to Pskov and Novgorod in Russia. It has also become one of the oldest university towns in Europe. In 1632, Swedish King Gustav II Adolph decided to open Academia Gustaviana here, which was the predecessor of the University of Tartu. For centuries, the University of Tartu developed this town into an internationally recognized place for the exchange of knowledge hosting researchers and students from many countries of the world. Every June around the Summer Solstice, Tartu is the venue of the All-Estonia Song Festival.
