Grocery stores are opened a little bit longer but closed at night.
An excellent way for travelers to learn more about the country is to visit its folk fairs and markets. The most famous folk fair is Riga Christmas Market, which takes place in the heart of the old city, at Dome Square. It is opened since the 30th of November till the 8th of January, and for the whole month turns the city center into a real New Year’s fairy tale. It’s the best place to enjoy traditional festive cookies and hot wine, purchase a variety of souvenirs and authentic handmade crafts. But if you missed this event, don’t be upset. Every Saturday regular fairs are held in a historical Kalnciema Quarter, visiting of which will bring a lot of pleasure for the entire family. The quarter is a unique historical place with wooden buildings of the 19th century and a charming atmosphere of old Riga. You could buy organic food, hand-made goods, creative souvenirs. There are also workshops and entertainments for kids. It is opened from 10:00 till 16:00.
One of the popular tourist locations in Riga is Flea Market, which is held in Spikery Quarter during the warm season. You could buy here old-fashioned items, porcelain products, books, clothes. It’s also worth to visit Central Market, placed in a walking distance from the city center. The market is full of local produce, smoked meet and famous Latvian fish, locally grown fruits, vegetables and flowers. It is not only a great place for shopping but also a way to feel the atmosphere of Riga.
